The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 62 prime cattle, 2 young bulls, 35 OTM cattle, 6,479 prime lambs and 6,908 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 18th December, 2008.

Top price in the prime cattle was 184.5p paid by W Kirkup, Butcher, Longtown for a Belgian Blue heifer from JF & SJ MacDonald, Ladyhousesteads. Limousin bullocks to 175.5p, 166.5p from Dashwellgreen and purchased by Messrs Nattrass, Butcher & Messrs Jewitt; Belgian Blues 175.5p Ladyhousesteads and purchased by W Kirkup, Butcher, others to 167.5p The Gill.

Young bulls to 159.5p Shaw Cottage.

A smaller show of OTM again met a fast trade with Limousin cows to 133.5p, 113.5p & 111.5p Hallburn; Belgian Blues 104.5p Hallburn; Friesians 103.5p Plumpe Farm; Simmentals 107.5p Hallburn. Galloway bullocks 130.5p, 127.5p Braemar, 107.5p Wileysyke; Bluegreys 121.5p Braemar.

The massive show of lambs were presented to a larger ring of buyers which ensured a buoyant trade throughout.

The 3,952 lambs over 36 kg averaged 128p with the 2,527 lambs under 36kg averaging 126.6p. The overall average for the sale was 127.5p.

The sale was topped at £81.50 for Suffolk lambs from T E Irving & Son, East Cliff and to 206p/kg for Beltex from Waltonwoodhead.
