The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 57 prime cattle, 7 young bulls, 42 OTM, 4,840 prime hoggs and 5,658 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 29th January, 2009.

Prime cattle were sharper on the week. Top price of 181.5p paid by W Kirkup & Son, Butcher for a Blonde heifer from Messrs R. Neill, Upper Tinwald. Blonde bullocks to 177.5p from The Gill and purchased by Messrs Nattrass, Butcher, Carlisle; Limousin 170.5p Upper Tinwald. Black & White bulls to 142.5p from Harelawhole.

In the OTM section well fed cows were the dearest trade of the season. Limousin to 146.5p, 141.5p Hallburn; Simmental 142.5p, 132.5p Hallburn; Belgian Blue 131.5p Denton; Angus 127.5p Randalinton; Friesian 109.5p The Moat. Simmental otm bullocks 147.5p Crawsknowe; Shorthorns 138.5p Braemar; Galloways 130.5p Braemar; Limousin 129.5p Braemar. Prices per head Belgain Blue cows £1117; Limousin £1075, £1054; Simmental £997, £940; Friesian £865; Angus bull £1004, Simmental bullock £988.

Prime hoggs were a similar show with all classes again meeting a fast trade with 3199 hoggs over 36 kilos averaged 165.2p and 1641 under 36 kilos averaged 157.4p. The overall average was 163.1p. Top price per kilo was 222p for Texel hoggs from Messrs Little, Hollands, Penton.
