The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 43 prime cattle, 2 young bulls, 23 over thirty month cattle, 4,526 prime hoggs and 5,238 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 20th January, 2011.

A mixed show of prime cattle saw quality sorts maintaining recent high rates to a top of 184.5p (x2) for Limousins from A. Irving, Toppin Castle, others 180.5p Toppin Castle and Hallburn 177.5p, 175.5p Houghton House, 174.5p, 167.5p, 165.5p Hallburn. Limousin bullocks to 176.5p Dashwell Green, others 171.5p The Gill, 169.5p, 167.5p (x2) Dashwell Green. Top per head of £1,191 (x2) for Limousin bullocks from Dashwell Green, Limousin heifers to £1,079 and £1,060 Toppin Castle, £1,044 Houghton House.

Young bulls sold to 155.5p for Limousin from Whiteclose.

A lot of feeding cows on offer were met by a similar trade with top prices of 141.5p and 123.5p for Simmental and Charolais heifers from J.W. Coulthard & Son, Brisco Hill. Cows to 114.5p for British Blue from Mill Street; Simmental 98.5p Sceughdyke, 95.5p, 82.5p Hallburn; Limousin 98.5p Shaw Cottage South, 93.5p Ladyhousesteads, 91.5p Hallburn.

An excellent show of 4,526 prime hoggs were forward. A few new buyers around the ring resulted in a stronger trade and an overall average of 185.9p per kilo. More lean export weight lambs (35-42kg) could have been sold to advantage (SQQ 32-45kg 186.2p per kilo). The price per kilo of 249p for Beltex from Stockwellhall.

Hill ewes (Blackface & Cheviot) and lean selling Continental ewes were sharper on the week with thick fat ewes still proving hard to cash.
