The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 45 prime cattle, 30 over thirty month cattle, 4,921 prime hoggs and 5,049 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 17th March, 2011.

Prime cattle continue to improve in value with buyers keen to purchase greater numbers. The sale was topped at 182.5p on four occasions for Limousin x heifers from Dashwellgreen (x2) and Toppin Castle and for a Charolais from Hallburn, purchasers being Border Meats Lockerbie and Messrs Jewitt, others to 180.5p, 177.5p Dashwellgreen, 179.5p (x2) High Stenries, 177.5p Toppin Castle. Bullocks sold to 179.5p for Limousin from The Gill bought by W. Kirkup, Butchers, Longtown, others 178.5p Dashwellgreen, 175.5p The Gill.

An excellent show of 4,821 prime hoggs sold to a packed ring of 17 active buyers, many more 38kg to 48kg well fleshed hoggs could have been sold The sale average was 213p per kilo overall with an SQQ (32kg-48kg) of 217p. A great consignment of 750 hoggets from Kintyre sold to a top of 246p per kilo for Texels from Mr Black, Tangy and to £105.50 for Texels from Mr Duncan, East Skeroblin. Another excellent run of 200 Hill Cheviot hoggs from Messrs Robertson, The Becks averaged 224.5p per kilo and £93.50 per head.
