The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 64 prime cattle, 5 young bulls, 29 over thirty month cattle, 4,893 prime hoggs and 3,749 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 31st March, 2011.

A quality show of 64 prime cattle met an outstanding trade yet again here at Longtown, more cattle could have been sold to fulfil buyers orders. British Blue bullocks sold to a top of 200p from A. Irving, Toppin Castle, purchased by W. Kirkup, Butchers, Longtown, others to 191.5p (£1,378.80) from N. Forster, Haining House, also purchased by W. Kirkup. Topping the heifer section was a Charolais from J. & N. Blaylock & Son, Hallburn, which sold at 190.5p with Limousins to 189.5p (x2) Toppin Castle and 186.5p Dashwell Green.

OTM cattle saw a much better show of Black & White cows on offer and all cows are keenly sought after, keep the cows coming to take advantage of the buoyant trade being had. Top price of 164.5p for a British Blue bullock from T. & M. Irving, Becton Hall. British Blue cows to 127.5p and 123.5p from Killeonan and Black & White cows to 119.5p Halltown, 118.5p Scugg House and Townhead, 117.5p West Scales, 114.5p Hetherside.

A good show of 4,893 prime hoggs were forward to the usual ring of buyers with more 40kilo to 44kilo well fleshed hoggs required to meet demand. This resulted in the highest average seen in this centre of 223p per kilo with the SQQ also being 223p.

An outstanding run of 200 hoggets from Messrs Thompson, Brenzett averaged £91.10 per head and 223.9p per kilo. Also forward were 206 hoggets from Messrs MacTaggart Bros which averaged £107.76.
