PRIMESTOCK REPORTS


The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 39 prime cattle, 4 young bulls, 50 over thirty month cattle, 7,239 prime lambs and 8,937 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 27th October, 2011.

Prime cattle were a larger show and an improved show of quality, but many more still needed to fulfil buyer’s orders. A brisk trade was had throughout with the sale average up 8p on the week. Topping the sale at 210.5p on three occasions was firstly a Limousin bullock from J. & N. Blaylock & Son, Hallburn, up next a Limousin heifer from W. & W. Faulder, Houghton House which was purchased by W. Kirkup & Sons, Butcher, Longtown and finally a Limousin heifer show by J. Jardine, The Yett, being purchased by Border Meat Wholesale Butchers, Lockerbie.

A massive show of 7,239 quality lambs sold to the usual ring of buyers with good quality export types in particular demand, regularly selling between 185p and 200p per kilo. The sale averaged a marvellous 178.5p per kilo, dearest of the week. An extremely large show of 8,937 cast ewes and rams saw trade £3 or £4 dearer on the week for all classes. The usual ring of buyers bid keenly for all classes of ewes with no let in the trade between morning and night.
