PRIMESTOCK REPORTS


The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart PLC had forward 46 prime cattle, 18 over thirty month cattle, 4,545 prime hoggs and 5,428 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 15th March 2012.

A smaller show of prime cattle resulted in a good trade throughout with the sale peaking at 216.5p twice, firstly for a fantastic Limousin bullock shown by Messrs Nicholson, The Gill and also for a heifer from Messrs Blaylock, Hallburn.

A small show of Over Thirty Month cattle met a brisk trade and topped at 178p for a British Blue bullock from T. & M. Irving, Becton Hall and 176p for a Limousin heifer shown by Messrs Coulthard, Low Hallburn.

A larger show of 4,545 prime hoggs were forward and short of buyers requirements, good export hoggs were easily sold regularly realising 220p-230p, with 45-50 kilos hovering around the 200p mark. The sale average was 208.3p per kilo, SQQ 214.6p.

A large show of 5,428 cast ewes & rams were forward, with the best show for quality seen in many months. Trade was a good £6 to £8 dearer on the week with export weight hill ewes short of requirements.
