The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart PLC had forward 52 prime cattle, 2 young bulls, 26 over thirty month cattle, 4,507 prime hoggs and 4,804 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 19th April 2012.

A smaller show of prime cattle, but still plenty of quality on offer and trade remained buoyant topping at 227.5p for a Limousin heifer from A. & W.J. Taylor & Son, Dashwell Green purchased by Mr J. Little, Charolais to 226.5p shown by J. & N. Blaylock & Son, Hallburn. British Blue bullocks sold to 225.5p from Messrs R. Neill, Upper Tinwald and 224.5p from J.C. & D. Nicholson & Son, The Gill.

The OTM cattle trade maintained recent high rates topping at 163.5p for Charolais from Messrs Baxter, Moss Side.

After a week of dropping trade around the country, Longtown still managed to attract an impressive show of 4,542 prime hoggs, which in line with this week's trend averaged 198p (210p in SQQ) with 1,474 hoggs being over 46 kilos!! Best export weight hoggs and small light weight hoggs were easily sold and short of buyers requirements. The sale was topped at 239p per kilo for Blackfaces from Mid Harrietsfield and to £115 per head for Texels from Station Yard, £112.50 Stackbraes, £110 Station Yard; Suffolk £97.80, £95.80 Westfield, £95.80 The Gill; Hill Cheviot £96.20 Shaw Head, £93.50 Potholm, £91.80 Whins and Creca Hall; Charollais £95.50 Wester Parkgate, £92.80 Whitehall; North Country Cheviot £93.20, £92.80, £92.20 Creca Hall; Blackface £92.80 Hyde Park, £90.20 Smalmstown, £89.80 Thorns; Greyface £87.80 Low Hallburn, £85.80 West Logan; Swaledale £82.80 Allenhead; Herdwick £73.80 Owlethirst, £73.50 Longrow.

A tremendous show of 4,804 cast ewes and rams was forward with more plainer and hill type ewes on show. The whole sale would be £4 to £5 less on the week but still achieved an overall average of £95.12.
