PRIMESTOCK REPORTS


The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 52 prime cattle, 14 young bulls, 39 over thirty month cattle, 5,326 prime lambs and 6,899 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 23rd August 2012.

A smaller, plainer show of prime cattle saw quality sorts remain in demand. Top price to 220.5p for a Limousin bullock shown by A. & W.J. Taylor & Son, Dashwell Green and purchased by W. Kirkup & Sons, Butchers, Longtown. Limousin heifers sold to 215.5p (3 times) firstly from J. & N. Blaylock & Son, Hallburn and the others both from D.J. Garthwaite & Son, Wyseby Hill Cottage.

The 39 OTM cattle saw a lot of plain weathered cows forward with a top price of 193.5p for a Limousin from Messrs Ritson, Swaites.

A larger show of 5,326 prime lambs were a very similar trade on the week, averaging 189.9p per kilo, but many lambs in the 35-38 kilo bracket lacking flesh and 40 kilo plus lambs very short of buyers requirements.

A larger show of 1,424 lightweight lambs saw smaller Swaledale and English Mule lambs little more than store price if lacking flesh. Another large entry of 6,899 cast ewes and rams attracted the usual ring of buyers with trade being £4 to £6 back on the week, with a lot more plain hill ewes forward harder to cash. Good selling Continental ewes remain easily sold and rams constantly short of buyers requirements.
