The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 45 prime cattle, 9 young bulls, 34 over thirty month cattle, 5,788 prime lambs and 10,444 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 18th October 2012.

A plainer show of prime cattle saw the sale top at 219.5p for a Limousin bullock shown by JR Nixon, Hallees, others to 218.5p from JF & I Armstrong, Netheronsett. Heifers topped at 217.5p for a Charolais from JW Vevers, High Stenries.

A better quality show of bulls were on offer and saw the sale top at 223.5p for a British Blue from J & P Routledge & Son, Netherton with Limousins topping at 217.5p from JC & D Nicholson & Son, The Gill. Top price per head was £1609.20 from M/s Routledge.

A larger show of prime lambs were forward to the usual ring of buyers with the sale average 162.7p/kg (SQQ 165.3p) the best average of the week.

The sale was topped at 219p for Beltex from AR Bell, Burnside who also had top price per head of £95.80 for Beltex. Good quality export and heavy lambs were easier to sell.

In the lightweight section only lambs with flesh realised recent high rates with lean lambs little more than store price. For the first time ever C & D Mart broke the five figure barrier for cast ewes, when a new centre record of 10,428 head were forward to a large ring of buyers. Trade for big heavy ewes and good selling ewes would be similar on the week. Blackface and Cheviot ewes with flesh easily sold, but large amounts of plain ewes still hard to cash.
