The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart PLC had forward 35 prime cattle, 6 young bulls, 45 over thirty month cattle, 5,260 prime hoggs and 7,549 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 10th January 2013.

A similar sized show of prime cattle saw quality scarce, with the best cattle continuing to sell at recent rates. The sale was topped at 225.5p for a Limousin heifer shown by Messrs Faulder, Houghton House.

Another large show of 5,260 hoggs was forward to a full ring of buyers. The sale average was 147.1p (SQQ 149.5p), dearer than other centres this week. Export hoggs and best quality hoggs demanded an excellent premium with one of the best shows for quality seen in many years. The trade for these hoggs eclipses most other centres each week and are keenly sought after. Heavy hoggs sharper than expected with lightweight hoggs steadier on the week.

The sale topped at 239p per kilo for Beltex from A.F. Young & Co., Bankhead and to £92.80 per head for Texels from D. & D. Aitken, Upper Cleugh and from T.
