The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 36 prime cattle, 2 young bulls, 19 over thirty month cattle, 10,172 prime hoggs and 4,489 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 14th March 2013.

A good show of prime cattle were forward to a full ringside of buyers which ensured a flying trade throughout. The sale was topped at 239.5p (x2) for a Limousin bullock shown by J.C. & D. Nicholson, The Gill, whose run of cattle averaged 237.7p. Heifers to 231.5p shown by Messrs Retson, Gardrum.

An unbelievable show of 10,172 prime hoggets were the largest number in over a decade, with a packed ring of buyers from beginning to end and not a bit of let up in trade. The whole sale averaged 219p per kilo with the SQQ an unbelievable 221p per kilo.

The sale was topped at 326p per kilo for Beltex from Snowhill Partners, Ericstanes, Moffat and to £129.50 per head for Beltex from Messrs McKie, Finnieness, Castle Douglas.

Lightweight hoggs saw the largest lift in the week being up £15 per head. Heavy hoggs similar, export hoggs sought after.

Today we held the annual show and sale for both Hill Cheviot and North Country Cheviot hoggs, thirty pens of 20 were presented to the judge Mr W. MacTaggart who made a very professional job in the judging.

The Hill Cheviots were kindly sponsored by P.J. Tractor Parts and the Championship was awarded to Mr Thomas Aitchison, North Shortcleugh for a pen of 46 kilo hoggs which realised £108 to Bowood Lamb.

A similar show of 4,489 cast ewes and rams were forward to a busy ring of buyers. Heavy ewes were dearer and short of requirements. Even lightweight ewes were keenly bid for as numbers tighten with the overall trade being £5 to £6 up on the week.
