PRIMESTOCK REPORTS


The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 49 prime cattle, 18 young bulls, 28 over thirty month cattle, 14 spring lambs, 7,860 prime hoggs and 3,434 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 11th April 2013.

Another good show of prime cattle saw a similar trade. The sale was topped at 252.5p and 247.5p for smart Limousin heifers shown by A. & W.J. Taylor & Son, Dashwellgreen, Messrs Taylor had a run of heifers to average 246.8p per kilo. Bullocks peaked at 243.5p for a British Blue from J.C. & D. Nicholson & Son, The Gill with Limousins to 241.5p from Messrs Taylor, Dashwellgreen. Limousin bullocks sold to a top price per head of £1,885.80 from N. Forster, The Haining House.

A much improved show of prime bulls saw a flying trade for all classes. Top price of 234.5p firstly for a Limousin shown by Mr A. Moffat, 6 Stonehouse then for a British Blue from J. Retson & Son, Gardrum, other British Blues to 233.5p also from Gardrum. Black & Whites sold to 195.5p and 194.5p from Messrs T.B. Imrie, Harelawhole.

More grazing cows but all classes were keenly bid for and many more could have been sold. The sale was topped at 207.5p for a Bazadaise shown by Messrs Ritson, Swaites. Limousin sold to 198.5p from T. Armstrong & Sons, Sceughdyke.

Another very large show of 7,860 prime hoggs were forward to a full ring of buyers, with a very mixed show for quality, resulting in an overall average of 201.4p per kilo (SQQ 202.3p). 566 hoggs were sold as stores with 95 two tooth hoggs forward, 2,074 lightweight hoggs and 5,168 forward. The sale was topped at £130 per head for Texels from Rascarrel, closely followed at £129.50 for Texels from Mossband House. Top per kilo of 288p for Texels from Messrs MacTaggart, Station Yard.
