The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart PLC had forward 45 prime cattle, 4 young bulls, 19 over thirty month cattle, 876 prime lambs, 2,841 prime hoggs and 3,394 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 6th June 2013.

A mixed show of prime cattle saw best quality cattle remain a good trade and plainer sorts a shade easier. Limousin bullocks topped the market at 256.5p and 251.5p shown by A. & W.J. Taylor & Son, Dashwellgreen, Limousin heifers topped at 249.5p (twice) also from the same home. Messrs Taylor’s run of cattle averaged 244.8p.

The 2,841 prime hoggs were a large show for the time of year and keenly sought after in any weight range providing they were good flesh, with lean hoggs realisation. The sale average was 180p per kilo with best hoggs regularly between 180p and 210p per kilo. 45 sold as stores, 411 two tooth hoggs, 1,099 light hoggs, 1,286 others. The sale was topped at £122.50 for Texels from East Kirk with a top per kilo of 250p for Beltex from Hillside.

An excellent show of 876 prime lambs, almost 200 head more than last years corresponding sale, in a slow season, saw a fine average of 245.8p per kilo, selling to a top of 310p per kilo for Texels from G. & C.E. Edminson, Middle Farm and to £125 per head for Suffolks from J. & N. McNeillie, High Balcray. More could be sold to vendors advantage. Many firms keen to kill Friday morning and smart Texel and Beltex lambs didn’t need to be too much weight to realise between 280p and 320p per kilo. Light weight lambs also keenly sought after.
