 The
Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers’ Mart P.L.C. held
their Annual Sale of Breeding Sheep at Longtown on Wednesday
2nd September 2009, when their was forward 4,041 head.
With buyers present
from as far as Norfolk and an excellent show forward.
All classes
of ewes met a substantial rise of £24.51
on the year. Top of £170 and £145 for 2 shear Dutch
Texels from Alderley Terrace; 3 shears £105 Stackbraes. Greyfaces
to £113 and £104 for 2 shears from Parcelstown, others £94
and £92 Hillcrest; 3 shear £86 Leaona Villa, £82
Calvo, £81 Butterdales; 4 shear £78 Dashwellgreen;
5 shear £72 Grainhead. Cheviot Mules to £75 for 3 shears
from Copperthorns; 4 shear £70 Chaple. Charollais 2 shears £90

Included in the sale were 600 Stock Scotch Mule ewes
from Messrs Duncan, Newlands, Auldgirth, Dumfries, due to a change
in farming policy. The stock was well presented and met a sound
trade to average £77
and to a top of £84 for 1 crops, £78 2 crop, £76
3 crop, £70 4 crop.
Shearlings were a much better quality
show with trade very dear and good sheep in demand. The sale average
was £100.99, up £35.35
on the year. Top price was £126 (x2) for Suffolk x shearlings
from Dairy Farm and Vicarage who also sold Suffolk x at £124, £123
and £121.

which saw quality sorts easily sold to a top of £580 for
a Texel shearling from Jonathan Graham, Lawshall, who sold others
to £400, £310 and £300.
