ANNUAL RAM FAIR


The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart PLC had forward 732 head at their Annual Ram Fair at Longtown on Wednesday 9th October 2013.

The Ram Sale of 165 Charollais, Beltex & Crossbred, 119 Suffolk and 280 Texel rams which were presented to a packed ring of buyers from beginning to end, with one of the best quality shows of commercial rams being presented in Longtown, resulting in a superb trade all day long.

The sale topped at £1,050 for a Texel shearling from annual consignor A.R. Bell, Kirkton, Hawick and purchased by Messrs Davies, North Synton.  Mr Bell also sold the next two top prices both at £900 with an average of £681 for 16 rams sold.

The pre-sale show of Texel rams, kindly sponsored by Trojan 4 x 4, Linstock, was ably judged by Mr Faulkner and Mr Hockenhull who awarded the Championship to a Texel shearling ram from R. Darling, Riddle Cottage, Lilliesleaf which realised £700 to the judge.  The reserve champion went to another shearling from Messrs Runciman, Allanshaws which later realised £760 to Messrs Tweedie, Brownbank, Peebleshire.

The show for Suffolk Rams was also judged by the same two persons who this time awarded the Championship to annual consignors Messrs Martindale, The Lands, Ecclefechan, whose shearling went on to realise £720 to Messrs Bradbury, Satchells, Lilliesleaf.  The reserve went to the first prized ram lamb from Messrs Sisson, Fenton, realising £400 to Messrs Armstrong, Sceughdyke.

The Annual Show & Sale of non-registered Blue Faced Leicester Rams, Ram Lambs and Females saw 168 head forward.

An excellent show of sheep was ably judged by Mr Walter Waugh, The Flatt, Roadhead, whose awards were as follows:-

Shearling Ram

1st & Champion (awarded the G.E. Carter Silver Challenge Trophy) Mr Tristan Davidson, Bellmount, Irthington, sold at £750 to Craig Farming Co.

2nd – D. Coulter, North Deanhead, sold at £460 to Auchencheyne Ltd.

Ram Lamb

1st & Reserve Champion (awarded the Robert Telford Memorial Trophy) Mr D. Watkin, East Newburn, Norham, Berwick upon Tweed, sold at £300 to Messrs Dent, Beamwham.

2nd – D. Watkin, East Newburn, sold at £400 to D. Story, Greenburn.

In general sheep were a very good commercial trade throughout with the majority making between £400 to £850.

Top price of the day went to Mr A. Carruthers, Peela Hill, Bewcastle whose two shearlings sold at £1,200 and £1,000 to Crowhall Farms, others £550 Side, £540 Snowden Close, £520 Old Police House and Shielsknowe and Burgh Head, £500 Low Struthers and North Deanhead.

Other Ram lambs to £340, £320 (x2) Low Struthers, £320 Crossdykes.

Aged rams to £900 Peela Hill, £520 Albie Rigg.

Gimmer shearlings to £280, £260 Peela Hill.
