STORE & BREEDING SHEEP REPORT


The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 7,056 store lambs (including 2,737 Cheviots) and 4,797 breeding sheep at Longtown on Tuesday 15th October 2013.

Sale ringWith a packed ring of both local and distant buyers, all classes of store lambs met an exceptional trade with the dearest trade seen so far.

A good show of 2,737 Cheviot lambs also met the best trade of the season with several pens over £60. Hill Cheviots to a top of £65 from Hartsgarth, others £64.50 Lymiecleugh, £62.50 Skelfhill, £61 Cossar Hill and Windyhaugh; Hill Northies £67.50 Pokerkine, others £65.50 Whiteknowe, £63.50 East Murton, £61 Kelsocleugh and Sorbietrees.

A tremendous show of 4,797 breeding sheep of all classes and ages, including the Second Main Sale for Hill Ewes saw a full ring of buyers bid keenly for most categories apart from older leaner Blackface ewes which were no more than killing price. Lowland sheep were keenly sought after and short of requirements. Also held were the part dispersal on behalf of Messrs Weightman, Rosgill Hall and a reduction on behalf of Messrs Taylor, Hopestead.

The sale was topped at £152 for a pen of Scotch Mule Shearlings from Messrs Sinclair, Shielsknowe, whose run of 83 shearlings averaged £144.77.
