The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 56 prime cattle, 5 young bulls, 54 OTM cattle, 4,580 prime lambs and 5,819 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 6th November, 2008.

The clean cattle were the dearest trade for several weeks. Top price was 183.5p for a Charolais x heifer from Messrs Blaylock, Hallburn to Wm Kirkup, Butcher, others to 175.5p, 173.5p Sceughdyke, 170.5p Hallburn, 168.5p, 164.5p Houghton House. Limousin to 171.5p, 167.5p from Englishtown to Border Meats, others to 170.5p Swaites & Hallburn. Belgian Blue bullocks to 183.5p from Hallburn to M Wharton (Meats), Blackbrow; Limousins 178.5p Becton Hall to M. Wharton, others to 175.5p Gardrum, 167.5p Hallburn.

Young bulls to 153.5p for Charolais from E Wilkie, Shaw Cottage South; Friesians to 132.5p from Harelawhill.

The OTMs were sold with more buyers round the ring and more could have been sold to advantage. Limousin cows to 137.5p (£976) Hallburn, 122.5p Fellend, 116.5p Morley Hill; Blondes 121.5p (£838) Hallburn; Simmental 119.5p, 117.5p, 114.5p Hallburn; Friesian 110.5p The Beeches; Belgian Blues 104.5p (£804) Hallburn; Angus 96.5p Sorbie; Welsh Black 111.5p Cambeck Hill. Another large show of prime lambs. Trade was easier on the week due to the larger numbers about owing to bank holiday in France. Overall a mixed show for quality and averaging 111.8p. The 3,093 lambs over 36 kilos averaged 113.6p with the 1,487 under 36 kilo averaged 104.3p. The sale was topped at £78.80 for Texel lambs from West Watten and to 166p per kilo for Beltex from Messrs Eastham, Naddle. Another excellent show of cast ewes and rams saw best Texel ewes at extreme rates with all classes of horned ewes £3 - £4 dearer on the week. Heavier ewes were harder to sell but still in demand.
