The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 59 prime cattle, 28 over thirty month cattle, 3,783 prime lambs and 5,262 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 30th July, 2009.

All classes of clean cattle were sharper to a top of 176.5p for a Blonde d’Aquitaine heifer from Messrs J.W. Vevers, High Stenries; Charolais 171.5p J. & N. Blaylock & son, Hallburn; Limousin 170.5p J.W. Vevers, High Stenries. Limousin bullocks to 175.5p from A. & W.J. Taylor & Son, Dashwellgreen.

The 27 Over Thirty Month cattle were slightly dearer with Limousin cows to 121.5p Enzieholm and Morley Hill; Angus 100.5p Barnglies.

The 3,783 lambs forward were the largest show of the season and met keen bidding. The overall average was 142.7p, with the 3,085 lambs 36 kilos and over averaging 141.9p.

Best Texel lambs were regularly 160-170p. Top price per kilo of 179p for Texels from East Mains, with a top per head of £74 for Texels from A.R. Bell, Burnside. Suffolk £67 Barnglies and Hollows Mill; Beltex £65.80 Glencartholm; Bleu d’Maine £65.80 Middle Farm; Charollais £63.80 The Kerr; Cheviot Mule £60.80 Dinley; Greyface £59.80 Albie Rigg; Leicester £58.80 Nunscleugh; Half Bred £58.80 High Moat; Blackface £53.80 Walloway; Lleyn £53.20 Whitcastles; Kerry £50.20 Whitcastles.

The 698 Light lambs averaged 147.5p and sold to a top of £53.20 for Texels from Dergoals, others £52.80 Dergoals & Rockcliffe Cross; Suffolk £51.80 Coshogle; Greyface £51.80 Arnicle; Jacob £50.80 Summerhill; North Country Cheviot £49.20 Cara View; Blackface £47.20 Arnicle; Charollais £46.80 Cara View; Leicester £42.20 Arnicle; Cheviot £41.80 Drumore Villa; Swaledale £39.20 Stonehall.

Another large show of 5,246 cast ewes and rams were forward to a larger ringside of buyers. Trade was similar to last week, again with lean good selling ewes very much in demand.
