The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 67 prime cattle, 26 over thirty month cattle, 5,457 prime hoggs and 6,170 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 10th March, 2011.

A larger entry of 67 prime cattle saw a plainer show on offer but still upholding recent high rates. Meaty heifers selling 170p to 182p and bullocks 168p to 184.5p. Top price of 184.5p for a Bazadaise bullock shown by Mr Neil Forster, Haining House and purchased by W. Kirkup & Sons, Butcher, Longtown; Charolais 176.5p Haining House, 172.5p High Stenries, 162.5p Sceughdyke; Limousin 173.5p Dashwell Green, 168.5p Fenton, 167.5p The Gill, 166.5p Dashwell Green and Sceughdyke, £165.5p The Gill, 164.5p Fenton and Slealands. Bullocks – 23 averaged 164.2p (294p at 56% Deadweight). Heifers – 44 averaged 164.8p (295p at 56% Deadweight).

A smaller, plainer show of cast cows were forward with Limousin cows selling to 122.5p (£826) from J. Magnay, Smallholms, others 107.5p Stonehall, 101.5p East Unthank (£705) ; British Blue 111.5p D’Mainholm (£763). A plain show of Black & White cows sold to 104.5p (£856). Bulls to £1,300 for a Simmental stock bull from Mr A. Beattie, Ryehill Farm.

A large show of 5,475 prime hoggs were forward, selling at an animated trade to a full ring of buyers. A shortage of export weight 40kg to 46kg with good flesh was evident and short of buyer’s requirements. The sale average was 211.6p per kilo overall with an SQQ (38kg-46kg) of 215p. More good export hoggs required on a regular basis. An excellent consignment of 800 hoggs from Kintyre sold way beyond seller’s expectations to a top of 242p per kilo for Texels from Mr Lines, Killocraw.

There was also an excellent consignment of 360 hoggs from Tim Crick, Beach Farm, Suffolk which averaged 220p per kilo. Top price per kilo of 280p for Beltex from Messrs McIlwraith, Mouldy Hills.
