PRIMESTOCK REPORTS


The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart PLC had forward 48 prime cattle, 11 young bulls, 35 over thirty month cattle, 5,494 prime lambs and 6,880 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 13th December 2012.

A nice show of quality in the prime cattle and a brisk trade to match, but more numbers required to satisfy a full ringside of buyers. Top price of 233.5p for a smart Limousin heifer shown by D J Garthwaite & Son, Wyseby Hill Cottage and purchased by W Kirkup & Son, Butchers, Longtown, others to 231.5p from Messrs R. Neill, Upper Tinwald and purchased by J Little, Charolais to 230.5p from J & N Blaylock & Son, Hallburn and bought by Border Meats, Lockerbie. Limousin bullocks sold to 227.5p shown by WH & D A Gass, Nunscleugh and purchased by Border Meats.

Another fine show of lambs were forward to a busy ring of buyers with a large amount of small lambs 27-33kg forward although keenly sought after. Good quality lambs both export weight and heavy weight sold well, but Mules and heavier Blackfaces and rougher lambs proved very hard to cash.

The sale average was 146.5p (SQQ 147.5p). The sale topped at £90 for Texels from Catslackburn and to 214.5p/kg for Beltex from North Greenhill.
