The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 61 prime cattle, 9 young bulls, 26 over thirty month cattle, 10,584 prime hoggs and 4,830 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 21st March 2013.

Prime cattle saw an increase in numbers and a great show saw a flying trade throughout with ten active buyers around the ring to ensure the whole sale averaged 223.07p.

The top price was 243.5p for a Limousin bullock shown by M. & G.A. Nicholson, The Lake, others to 242.5p and 239.5p from J.C. & D. Nicholson & Son, The Gill. Heifers sold to a top of 239.5p twice for Limousins shown by A. & W.J. Taylor & Son, Dashwellgreen and from D.J. Garthwaite & Son, Wyseby Hill Cottage.

An even larger show of 10,584 prime hoggets were forward again this week to a busy ring of buyers, which is attracting a far better quality of hogg.

Although today many more grass fed Blackface and Mule lambs were forward along with a large number of lightweight hoggs, thus resulting in averages being slightly down on the week.

The best quality hoggs in any weight range continued to demand premium prices and are always keenly sought after regardless of the number of sheep on show.

The whole sale averaged 205.5p per kilo with a top per kilo of 330p for Beltex from Messrs Ritson, Swaites and to £127.80 per head for Texels from Messrs Fisher, Lairdlaugh.
