The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart PLC had forward 53 prime cattle, 4 young bulls, 24 over thirty month cattle, 2,274 prime lambs, 1,160 prime hoggs and 3,166 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 27th June 2013.

More prime cattle forward with quality sorts sharper and more required. Top price to 264.5p for a British Blue shown by A. & W.J. Taylor & Son, Dashwellgreen, Limousins sold to 263.5p, 261.5p (x2), 257.5p also from Dashwellgreen. Messrs Taylors run of 12 bullocks sold to average 255.3p. Limousin heifers sold to 256.5p and 253.5p both from J. & N. Blaylock & Son, Hallburn, whose run of heifers averaged 249.7p.

A larger than anticipated show of 2,274 prime lambs was forward to a full ring of buyers, all actively buying lambs. The trade proves that lambs don’t have to be very heavy to realise decent money, best quality Beltex and Texel lambs still keenly sought after and short of requirements. The overall average was 232.5p per kilo. The most noticeable trade was the demand for lambs between 26 and 36 kilos, which regularly sold between 230p and 260p. More lambs now required on a weekly basis to keep our packed ring of buyers satisfied.

Top price of 290p per kilo for Texels from P.G. Bouch, Copperthorns with a top per head of £116.50 for Texels from H. & G. Fisher, The Beeches.

Also marketed during the week on a weigh and pay basis were 735 lightweight lambs between 26 and 36 kilos, which are now sought after weekly.

A smaller show of 1,160 prime hoggs were forward to a busy ring of buyers all keen for hoggs providing they had good flesh. The sale average was 160p per kilo. Demand for hoggs is likely to continue into July, as long as they are carrying flesh. The sale was topped at £97.80 per head for Texels from Marygate and to 201p per kilo for Beltex from Cowcorse.
