Longtown Primestock Sale Report
The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart plc had forward 15 prime cattle, 1 young bull, 8 OTM cattle, 51 spring lambs, 5,779 prime hoggs and 3,341 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 16th April 2015.
A larger show of prime cattle were forward and met a slightly firmer trade than last week. OtM cattle also met a sharp trade.

There were 51 Spring lambs forward of a mixed variety, mostly heavyweight, selling to a top of £103 for 44 kilo Suffolks and to 234p per kilo for 40 kilo Charollais from Westerparkgate. The overall average was 225p/kg.
Another large show of 5,779 prime hoggs were forward to the usual ring of buyers, meeting a two tier trade with lightweight hoggs and export hoggs up to 44 kilos easily sold between 190 and 210p/kg with anything over 45 kilos proving very difficult to cash, unless of good quality. This is following the national trend, where too many heavy sheep have been kept, whilst demand would allow for more export weight sheep to be shown. The sale averaged 189p overall, but the SQQ (up to 45kg) was 198p which tells its own story.
Top price per head was £112 for Texels from Clyth Mains and to 223p per kilo for Texels from Hallburncroft.

A much larger show of 3,341 cast ewes and rams were forward to the usual ring of buyers. Trade was as expected, easier on the week, after last weeks bonanza. Heavy ewes £12 - £15 per head back, light ewes very similar, rams easily sold. Trade was back to levels seen two weeks ago. Top price was £210 for a Suffolk ram from Catslackburn.
