Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 67 cattle, 6,738 prime lambs and 4,387 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 1st December 2016.

The company held its Annual Christmas Show and Sale where an entry of 67 cattle, comprising of 25 cows, 4 prime bulls and 38 clean cattle were forward. By 10am the cattle shed was full of old and new customers preparing cattle to go under the critical eye of the judge.

John and Lindsay Rule Supreme

This year the judging was in the capable hands of Jim Robertson, Galashiels, who went about his work in a methodical manner looking for cattle that fitted the modern butcher. In his Championship line up he had in front of him, James Crichton’s Limousin steer, Kilnstown & Watson’s Galloway, John & Lindsay’s Limousin heifer and Robert Fiddler’s Charolais heifer. He awarded the Championship to John and Lindsay Vevers first prize Limousin heifer, a black home bred Limousin, with James Crichton’s Limousin steer standing Reserve.

After the show and prizegiving the sale commenced with the OTM’s which saw demand strong at ringside. Top price for cows was 136p paid twice, firstly for the Champion beef cow from Messrs Gass, Nunscleugh, and secondly for a Limousin x from Norman Douglas. Dairy cows sold to a top of £837.90 for the first prize cow. Overage heifers sold to 198p from Billy Grieve, The Snab.

Young bulls, a short entry of dairy bred bulls sold to £1052.35 for the first prize bull from Messrs Coulthard, Justicetown. The prime cattle commenced with the Champion which after strong bidding sold at 270 to the Kirkup family, to be sold in their Longtown and Silloth shops. The Reserve realised 228p to Peter Smith of Highgate Meats Ltd. The turnout in the show and commercial section of continental heifers was a joy to see and a pleasure to sell regularly at 205-225p. Natives as ever were dominated by Galloways, which topped at 220p for the Champion with the rest 195-210p.

A successful day with thanks to vendors, buyers, gracious sponsor Jobsons, represented by old father time "Wick" and our judge Mr Robertson, and to everyone who helped on the day.

Today witnessed the Annual Christmas Show and Sale of prime lambs, kindly sponsored Jobsons Animal Health, where an outstanding show of 6,738 prime lambs were forward for sale to the usual busy ring of buyers. As larger shows of lambs were out across the country, trade eased slightly especially for overly fat lambs which are in abundance. Best selling export types remain easily sold along with lightweight lambs, whilst heavyweight lambs slightly cheaper. The sale averaged 167ppk overall, and an SQQ of 172pk, with 1,400 lambs out of the SQQ. Included in today’s sale were 68 pens of 10 show lambs, in ten different breed classes, ably judged by Mr William Tinning of Dunbia, who awarded the Championship to local consigner and mart employee Messrs Caruthers, Peela Hill, Bewcastle, for a pen of ten outstanding Blackface lambs. These lambs scaled at 42kg and realised £100 (238ppk) selling to the judge. The Reserve Champions also went to a longtime local supporter of the mart, Messrs T N Cavers & Sons, Sorbie, Langholm, with a tremendous pen of South Country Cheviots which scaled at 43kg and sold at £80 also to the judge. The sale topped at 245p for Beltex lambs from Messrs Lines, Killocraw, Kintyre and to a top £100 for show Champions from Peela Hill.
