Longtown Primestock Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 38 cattle, 6,068 prime hoggs and 3,925 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 9th March 2017.
The company held its weekly sale of primestock where an entry of 38 prime and OTM cattle were forward. An increased ring of buyers competed strongly for all types of cattle with numbers short of buyer’s needs.
OTM’S: Richard tops at 187p
Trade pounds dearer on the week with two extra faces at ringside. The entry lacked meat but everything was wanted. Richard Ritson’s black Bazadaise topped the section at 187p. Hill cows from the Cavers twins sold to 124p for Angus x with dairy bred British Blues to 123p from Richard Ritson. Two hill stock bulls sold to 119p for a Whitebred Shorthorn from Ross Bell and with an Angus bull to 110p from the twins.
Clean cattle were a mixed entry sold to 223p for an outstanding Limousin bullock from James Taylor, who also sold heifers to 221p. Staffler sold others to 214p again for Limousin’s. heavyweight steers sold to £1,462.90 from Jonathon Nixon, Hallees, with others to £1,401.30.
A much larger show of 6,068 prime hoggs were forward for sale to the usual busy ring of buyers, with all classes steadier on the week, apart from heavyweight hoggs which remined easily sold. Lightweight hoggs easier unless well fleshed, with a severe shortage of best quality and export weight hoggs on offer.
A huge show of over 2,000 Blackface hoggs were forward in all weight ranges with the best end realising last week’s high rates but plainer lighter sorts cheaper.
Also, today we held the Annual Show and Sale of prime Blackface hoggs; where over 500 hoggs were forward in pens of 20, and was kindly sponsored by The Scottish Farmer and ably judged by Mr Will Tinning of Dunbia, who awarded the Championship to an outstanding pen of 20 from regular supporters Messrs McTurk, Barlaes, Castle Douglas, which scaled 45kg and realised £80 selling to the judge. The Reserve ticket was awarded to another strong pen from Messrs McWhirter, Garvilland, Glenluce, which scaled 47kg and realised £77 to M Lomax.
