Longtown Primestock Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 27 cattle, 3,031 prime hoggs and 2,809 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 13th April 2017.
The company held its weekly sale of OTM’s and prime cattle where an entry of 27 head were forward. Demand was excellent throughout from the usual company of buyers.
OTMs: An entry dominated by small type hill cows with the majority non-fabbl. Messrs Garthwaite topped the sale with a 17 year old Limousin suckler at 131p. Simmental x from Kintyre sold at 125p, with Blondes to 131p.
Prime cattle were another tremendous quality show topping at 228p for a Limousin from Drew and Brian Taylor, who also sold Blondes to 219p. Robert Fiddler’s wagon of heifers averaged 217p. as ever more needed to supply demand. Remember maximum commission £30 per head.
A smaller show of 3,031 prime hoggs due to Easter weekend arrangements, were forward to the usual busy ring of buyers. Best quality hoggs were virtually none existent today, although good quality export hoggs maintained recent rates. More heavyweight hoggs forward, remained similar, with a larger show of lightweight hoggs which were sharper on the week. Many more are needed to fill demand.
The sale topped at 248p for Texel hoggs from Messrs Budge, Brae Edge, Caithness and top price per head of £110 for Texel hoggs from Messrs Bell, Kirkton, Hawick. Sale averaged 173.5p (SQQ 181.8p).

A larger show of 2,809 cast ewes and rams was presented to the usual ring of customers. Heavyweight ewes were slightly easier apart from the best, with lightweight ewes similar on the week. Rams remain easily sold, with all classes short of buyer requirements.
Sale topped at £154 for Charollais ewes from Broompark and rams to £117 for Charollais from Chaseside.
