BORDER EWE SALE

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers’ Mart P.L.C. held their Annual Border Ewe Sale of Cheviots and horned sheep at Longtown on Wednesday 29th September 2010.

7,328 head were forward to a full ring of buyers from all over the country, ensuring a buoyant trade with most prices and averages up on the year.

North Country Cheviot shearlings sold to £122 from Messrs Plenderleith, Rock, Alnwick, selling to Messrs Armstrong, High Moat, Longtown, others £112 Naddle, £108, £104 Nether Ernambrie, £105 Springfield, £102 (x2) Humbleheugh.

North Country Cheviot ewes sold to £94 from Messrs Wilson, Marwhirn to Mrs Stephenson, Cumwhinton, others £92, £90 Marwhirn, £88 (x2) Cardewlees, £84 Seathwaite.

North Country Cheviot ewe lambs sold to £98 from Messrs Plenderleith, Rock to Messrs Armstrong, High Moat, others £93 Rock, £82 Lanefoot, £81 East Murton, £80 Bradley.

In the Hill Cheviot department ewes were also keenly sought after with a large number heading to Wales.

The Sale was topped and a new centre record made of £101 for 5 year old ewes from Messrs Goodfellow, Glengeith selling to Cnewr Estates, Wales, others £93, £88 Castle Crawford, £82 Catslackburn, £72 Crossdykes.

Hill Cheviot shearlings to £93 from Messrs Warwick, Girnwood to J. Vevers, High Stenries and Messrs Owen of Wales, others £90, £86 Fingland, £80 Chapel.

Hill Cheviot ewe lambs to £67 from Messrs Irving, Mount Benger to Messrs Cropper, Irwell, others £66, £61 Mount Benger, £64 Castle Crawford, £60 Girnwood and Catslackburn.

Also included was the dispersal of 800 Hill Cheviots from Drycleughlea, Roberton on behalf of Messrs Howat, ewe lambs £56, shearlings £76, one crop £75, two crop £71, three crop £73, four crop £62.

In the horned ewes department, centre records were again broken when Messrs Walton, Wanwood Hill, Alston sold a pen of Blackface shearlings at £150 per head to Messrs Aitchison, The Side, Newcastleton, others £128 Miltonise, £104 Sunnyside, £98 Dykecroft.

Blackface ewe lambs to £70 also from Wanwood Hill to Messrs Goddard, The Gall, Lockerbie, others £58 Sorbie.

Blackface draft ewes to £70 from Dalhanna Farming to Messrs Nicholson, Old Police House, others £64 Sorbie, £62 Miltonese and Ardon, £60 Craigieburn, £58 Chapel.

Swaledale shearlings to £114 form Messrs Smith, Westhills to Messrs Mason, others £96 Shankfieldhead.

Swaledale ewes sold to £123 for three crops from Naddle to Messrs Little, Cannerheugh, others £100 Branthwaite (3 crop), £98 and £92 Naddle (3 crop), £88 and £84 Baggra Yeat (3 & 4 crop), £83 The Side (3 crop).

A good quality show of over 100 North Country Cheviot shearling rams met strong demand for the better sorts with the lower price ranges rather harder to cash. Top price was £720 from J. Runciman & Sons, Allanshaws bought by Messrs Holliday, Capelfoot. Messrs Holliday also bought at £660 from Messrs Smith, Whiteknowe, Penton. At £600, a ram from G. Davies & Partners, North Synton went to the pedigree flock of Messrs W. Williams, Wales. Another seller at £600 was C.R. Graham & Son, Carruthers to P. Edmondson, Seathwaite, Messrs Graham also sold at £540 and £520. G. & F. Milne, Kinaldy sold to £500.
