STORE & BREEDING SHEEP REPORT


The principal annual sale of 5,100 Cheviot Mule Ewe Lambs and Gimmer Shearlings was held at Longtown on Tuesday 28th August 2012.

A packed ringside of buyers from Aberdeenshire to Buckinghamshire and Devon ensured trade was yet again buoyant, even if a few pounds back on last years record rates. An increased entry saw the quality lots keenly sought after with the smaller running lambs less on the year.


The 1,480 Cheviot Mule Shearlings sold to a top of £210 from G.B. Milroy, Mains of Machermore, Newton Stewart to average £138.60, just £5 down on last years record.

Principal prices:- £180 (x2) Granton, £180, £172 West Hall, £170 Granton, £168, £162 St Johns Kirk, £155 Castlehill, £150 Skelfhill and Castlehill.

The larger entry of 2,286 North Country Cheviot Mule Ewe Lambs met a brisk trade for strong lambs with running lambs easier. They sold to a top of £148 twice from Messrs Hedley, Overacres, Otterburn and from Messrs Cockburn, Kingside, Leadburn. The average was £108.90, back £10 on the year.
Principal prices:- £147 St Johns Kirk, £146 Wardhills, £144 Gospel Hall, £142 Hownam Grange, Kingside and Liddesdale, £140 Wardhills.

Messrs Cockburn, Kingside sold 100 head and averaged £134.57.
Messrs Hedley, Overacre sold 200 head and averaged £126.63.
Messrs King, Gospel Hall sold 300 head and averaged £119.19.
Messrs Aynsley, Wardhill sold 500 head and averaged £115.19.

The 770 Hill Cheviot Mule Ewe Lambs were harder to sell on the year to average £80.08, back £15 on the year. They sold to a top of £138 from Bridgewater & Wood, Potholm.

Principal prices:- £134, £118 Crossdykes, £124, £116, £114 Terrona, £125, £100 Potholm, £108 Carterton.

Also included were 324 Suffolk and Continental x Cheviot Mule Ewe Lambs which sold to £132 for Texels from Wester Ulston.

Principal Prices:- Texel x £130, £126 Wester Ulston, £130 Gilston; Rouge x £126, £116 Marston Hall; Suffolk x £80, £79 Fountainside.

Store Lambs

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart PLC had forward 5,026 Store Lambs at their Sale at Longtown on Tuesday 28th August, 2012.

A packed ring of both distant and local feeders ensured all classes easily maintained late high rates for a quality show of lambs.

Top was £75, £72.50 for Beltex lambs from J Oliver & Sons, Waltonwood Head, others to £73 Mossband House; Suffolk £74.50 Geltsdale, £67 Satchells; Texel £72, £70 East Foreshield, £69 Stonehall and Heugh; Cheviot Mule £68 Geltsdale; Charollais £67.50 Geltsdale; Greyface £65.50 Satchells, £65 Allensgreen; North Country Cheviot £66.50 Whiteknowe; Lleyn x Texel £61 Lustruther; Oxford £60 Mossband House; Hill Cheviot £57.50, £55 Nisbet; Blackface £40 The Row.

Greyface gimmers to £104 Whitney; Suffolk cross £109 Whitney.
