Longtown Suffolks to 4,200gns

Strong International Trade For Females

A judge from Spain and buyers from Spain, Portugal and the Netherlands supported a fast trade and a total clearance for pedigree Suffolk breeding females which averaged £728 at Longtown on Monday 29th July 2019.

The annual show and sale, with an entry of 65 females and ram lambs was judged by Senor Amable Cueto Muniz from the Urbies Suffolk flock in Asturias, Spain.  He selected as overall champion, a 2016 ewe from I. & J. Barbour's Solwaybank flock, Annan, Dumfriesshire.  This ewe, by Solwaybank Overdrive out of a Solwaybank Solario dam attracted strong interest and sold for 3,000gns. to Suffolk Do Pinheiro, Amadora, Portugal.  The same buyers took another Solwaybank ewe at 1,400gns. Topping the sale, however, at 4,200gns., again from the Solwaybank consignment, was a Rheadr Rastafari daughter from a Cairness Classic Fyvie dam which went to Jan Dik Ter Maaten from the Gelderland town of Lunteren in Holland.

The female reserve champion was a ewe from D.P. & R.A. Delves' Bridgeview flock from Powys.  A Lakeview Harbinger daughter from a Whitestone Monarch of the Glen mother, this ewe sold for 750 gns., again to Suffolk Do Pinheiro. Other ewes sold to 650gns. to go to H.M. Sutherland, Golspie.

First prize in the gimmer section went to Solwaybank for a Strathbogie Sirius sired sheep which went to Portugal.with other Solwaybank gimmers to 750 and 600gns., the latter to Elaine Wilkie, Boreland, Lockerbie  These were followed by a 550gns. top for a level pen from C. Vaughan, Preseli-Hill, Pembrokeshire.  This and others from this far-travelled consignment went on to Northern Scotland to Kevin Gunn, Scotscalder, Caithness and H.M. Sutherland, Golspie.  More females could have been sold to advantage.

The champion ram lamb and reserve overall champion was from the Sullom flock of G.I. Richmond, Goosnargh, Preston. By Strathisla Schumacher, he went to Kevin Gunn`s Caithness based flock at 650gns.  Overall, however, the ram lamb trade was very selective, averaging £366 with lambs looking good value to potential purchasers.
