Longtown Breeding Sheep Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Ltd held their weekly their Annual Main Sale for Breeding sheep at Longtown on Tuesday 17th September 2019, where there was a catalogue entry of 7,967.

Buyers were represented from over the UK, with trade very good throughout.

The second sale of Cheviot Mule ewe lambs proved the highlight of the sale with prices up £10 to £20 on the first sale. Top £132 & £122 & £118 from Messrs Ridley, Ranbeck, Penrith; others to £122 & £108 Thornship, £110 West Hills, £105 Broadmea.

The Main Sale of Greyface Mule ewe lambs were an outstanding quality show, again buyers were present from a wide area. As with other centres this week, trade was less on the year by the extent of £1.69 per head. Judging was in the capable hands of Jimmy Sinclair, Crookston, Heriot, whose awards were as follows;

Class 1 - Ex Blackface bred

1st - A Carruthers & Sons, Peela Hill, Bewcastle - £110

2nd - RW & SD Flintoft, Sourhope, Hownam - £112

3rd - Wanwood & Partners, Wanwood Hill, Alston - £100

Class 2 - Ex Swaledale bred

1st - JP Lee, Morley Hill, Whitfield - £128

2nd - M Smith, Mount Farm, Blackford - £92

3rd - WH & DA Gass, Nunscleugh, Bewcastle - £105

Overall Champion - A Carruthers & Sons, Peela Hill - £110

Other leading prices £115 Shitlington Hall & Hill Brae, £104 Greensburn, £100 Lawston & Barkbeth & Wanwood Hill.

Other breed ewe lambs met a strong trade for the very best, with Texels to £120 Middle Farm, Beltex to £92 Hill Brae; Suffolks to £94 Gospel Hall.

All breeds of gimmer shearlings met a very strong trade and were short of requirements. Top of £220 & £160 for Texels from Searigg, £190 North Sharperton, £160 & £158 Uppercleugh, £155 & £152 Upper Mains, £148 & £142 Dunnabie, £145 Glenjaan & The Side & Mouldy Hills, £142 Thornship & Foxglove. Suffolk x to £122 Upper Mains. Welsh Mules to £112 High Dovecote.

Ewes a met a selective trade with the best making good money. Included in the sale was the dispersal of 500 breeding ewes from Robin Bell, Borthwick Brae, Roberton, Hawick which were all well presented for sale. His top was £116 for 1 crop Texels, 2 crop £113, 3 crop £88. Greyface 1 crop to £100, 2 crop £106, 3 crop £94. Top price in the ewes was £130 & £127 & £124 for Texels from Paul Gass, Aldery Terrace. Cheviot Mules to £100 & £98 New Bank, £98 West Bolton. Greyfaces to £99 Chapel Farm.

2018 sale report
