Longtown Store Sheep Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Ltd had forward 9,047 store lambs and feeding ewes at Longtown on Tuesday 22nd October 2019.

A massive show of quality lambs and the usual large turnout of local and buyers from a distance present, ensured a good trade from start to finish, with all breeds meeting a sharper trade on the week. Included in the sale was the annual consignment of 800 Texel x and Suffolk x lambs from Peter Smith, Cocklakes House, whose top was £67 for Texels and £65.50 for Suffolks.

Beltex sold to £85.50 for a pen from Unthank, others to £74.50 Gillesbie Farms; Texels to £75 Mid Banks, £74 Aldery Terrace & Low Old Shields; Suffolks to £66 Weeds, £65.50 Cocklakes House, £64.50 Overtonbush; Charollais to £70 & £69.50 Howberry; Cheviot Mules to £66.50 Embley, £65 Shepherds Cottage; Leicesters to £68 Cronklea; Greyfaces to £64 Bailey Mill, £62 High Dunashery, £60 Barsalloch & The Knarr & Prospect House; Hebrideans to £50 Hill House Farm; Jacobs to £57 Old Chapel; Swaledales to £41.50 Hesleywell, £36 Sheepriggs & High Dunashery.

Cheviots (3,041) attracted many buyers with trade very dear and short of requirements and why vendors should support your local market. Top £61.50 for hill Northies from Routin Lynn, others to £57.50 Holystone Estate and £57 Lymiecleugh. Hill Cheviots to £60 Granton, £59 Glendinning, £57.50 Chanlockfoot & Muirhead, £57 Langhope.

An extreme show of 1,809 Blackfaces for the Blackface Breeders show and sale was ably judged by Neil Conaghan, West Scales, Gretna, who’s awards were as follows;

1st - G.O.M. Famelton, Horseholm, Gilsland

2nd - Brieredge Farms, Bellingham

3rd - I.H.G. Warden, Skelfhill, Hawick

Although a quality entry, Blackfaces proved to be best and easiest sold on the day. Top £65.50 Horseholm, others to £59.50 Lanehead, £57.50 Brieredge & Skelfhill & Wanwood Hill.
