Longtown Store & Breeding Sheep Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Ltd held their Great Annual Ram Fair at Longtown on Wednesday 7th October 2020, where one of the best shows of quality commercial rams of all classes was seen for many years. With buyers from all ends of the country competing to buy the sires of next years lamb crop, a massive lift in averages and extreme clearance rates were being witnessed.
The sale was lead for the second year in succession by Bryden Nicholson, Highfield Farming Ltd, Knock Farm for a Texel ram lamb, where he sold his pen leader for £2,200 to I&B Sutherland, Millingsound, Shetland, with Bryden also consigning the 2nd top at £1,500, for another lamb by the same sire, to Messrs Holliday, Cathpair, Stow. Texel shearlings met an animated demand with customers galore for all classes of tups, especially for those with size, good skins and shape. Topping a £950 from Neil Elliot, Duke Street, who sold another at £900.

Cross bred and other continental rams with power and shape again sold to serious demand, with best end pure Beltex being a massive premium and sold to a top of £1,000 for the pick of the Corstane pen of M Dunlop, closely followed at £900 for a Beltex x Texel shearling from G & CE Edminson, Middle Farm.

A good entry of Suffolk shearling rams and ram lambs were forward with quality better bred rams easy to sell to the full ringside of potential purchasers topping the sale was a very well-bred Shearling consigned by M/s G Beatie, Guards Mill.

An Increased entry of Blueface Leicester Shearlings & Ram Lambs sold to a fantastic trade with all vendors going home highly delighted with their days trading. Topping the sale was an upstanding, very well bred, crossing type ram lamb consigned by M/s RW & M Carruthers, Hill Brae realising £1,000. Many more could have been sold to vendor advantage as demand outstripped supply by quite a margin.
