Longtown Primestock Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward an entry of 8,107
sheep comprising of 4,782 prime hoggs and 3,325 cast ewes & rams at their
weekly sale at Longtown Mart on Thursday 9th January 2025.
Cast
cows were all native bred and all classes proved very much in demand. Numbers
required on a weekly basis to satisfy buyer demand here at Longtown. The sale
topped at £1,851 for an Angus shown by Bridgewater & Wood, Potholm,
Langholm with Galloways to £1,350 from Eskdalemuir Forestry, Clerkhill,
Langholm and £1,267 from J Higgs Farms, Arkleton, Langholm. Top per kilo of
250p from Clerkhill and 242p from Potholm.
A larger but very
mixed show of 4,782 prime hoggs were forward. Fed hoggs maintained recent high
rates of return and all classes were easily sold, where grass hoggs short of
flesh are wanted on a Tuesday in the store to maximise returns.
The sale topped
at 455p for Beltex shown by C Saunders, Barr Hill, Newton Stewart.
Top per head of
£210 for Suffolks from J Douglas, Cambeckhill, Newtown.

A much larger
show of 3,325 ewes and rams with trade being simply biblical, rates unseen and
returns breaking the bank. Vendors from all corners of the United Kingdom left
the sheep ring at Longtown astounded and highly delighted with their mornings
trading. More required next week as demand keeps soaring. All roads lead to
Longtown.

Blackfaces to £160 from B Ryder, Newton Cottage, Moffat.
Rams
to £260 for Texels from J Elliot, Roxburgh Mains, Kelso and for Charollais from
Mossburnford Farm, Jedburgh.
