Longtown Beef Shorthorns Tuesday 16 June 2026

A large crowd were in attendance for the 16th June “Society Supported” sale of pedigree Beef Shorthorns, followed by Hereford and other breeding cattle, at Longtown Mart, with a good commercial trade resulting.

Topping the Beef Shorthorn sale at 3,400gns was an in-calf heifer from C & J C Stephenson, Pikestone, Bishop Auckland. Pikestone Margo Vienna, by Plutarch of Upsall, she sold to L. Pearson & Sons, Adderstone Mains, Northumberland.

Cows with calves at foot sold to 3,200gns, again to Messrs Pearson, for the five-year-old Shawhill Rainbow Broadhooks from Shawhill Shorthorns.  Galla Primrose Margo, a cow with heifer calf from J. W. Frame, Little Galla took 3,000gns from T. B. Stamper & Sons, Harrot Hill, Cockermouth.  Cows with calves averaged £2,940.

A good entry of Shorthorn maiden heifers attracted plenty of interest, selling to 2,900gns for Burnfoot Victoria Winnet from Hugh Sloan, Burnfoot, Lauder. A Stonehills Stargazer daughter, she was purchased by A.N. & H.S. Tomkins, Hallsford, Hethersgill.  Hugh Sloan had other heifers to 2,500gns with P. Scott Taylor, Barnaigh, Kilbarchan selling to 2,500gns. J. & S. Anderson, Stouslie, Hawick had a heifer at 2,450gns & a nice consignment from E.M. & J. R. Irving, Stockdale Farm topped at 2,400gns.  Overall, heifers averaged £2,152.

The bull trade was selective, these selling to 3,000gns each for Galla Walker from J.W. Frame and Shawhill Valentino from Shawhill Shorthorns.

An attractive consignment of pedigree Herefords from Ian Wilkinson, Balgay Farmhouse sold to 3,500gns for Redstroke Jennifer 116, a Netherhall Planet daughter with calf at foot, which went to Pilmuir, Hawick.

A Limousin heifer with calf at foot from Miss K. Elwen, New Pallyards realised £3,600 with Shorthorn cross heifers with calves from H. & M. Connell, Minsca making to £3,050 and Luing bulling heifers from G. Roddam, Blackcarts Farm to £1,890.
