Longtown Breeding Sheep Tues 15 Sept 26
C&D Auction Marts Ltd held their Annual Main Sale for Breeding sheep at Longtown on Tuesday 16th September 2026, where there was a catalogue entry of 7,011.
The Mule ewe lamb judging was in the capable hands of Michael Lawson, Pasture House, Wigton who after much deliberation duly awarded the champion pen to Messrs Hope, Orthwaite Hall.
The champion pen of lambs went under the hammer to a full ringside of buyers, after frantic bidding the hammer fell at £220 to Mr S Felton, Hill Head Farm, Buckinghamshire.
Another fantastic show of well-bred Mule ewe lambs were forward to a packed ringside of both travelled and local purchasers ensuring all classes were an absolute joy to sell. Top end lambs proved short of purchaser requirements with several purchasers going home empty handed.
Topping the sale was first time consigners M/s Craig, North Hanging Wells with an outstanding pen of 10 Mule ewe lambs ex Blackface ewes, selling to a centre record of £450 selling to Mr P Wilson, Dumfriesshire.
M/s Hope, Mouldy Hills sold an exceptional run of over 200 ewe lambs which where the talk of the town, purchasers queuing up to try and buy these seriously well-bred girls. Topping at £255 with their second prize pen of 10 and levelling at a well deserved £228.
Another run of over 200 lambs was from the renowned producers M/s Carruthers, Peela Hill whose very well turned out lambs sold to frantic bidding as their first prize lambs went onto realise £300, to a regular purchaser who knows exactly how the lambs do. This run of bonny ladies went onto average £208.
M/s Nichol, Lawston sold an incredible run of over 170 lambs to a top of £240 with this stylish run of lambs going onto average a very pleasing £208 as well.
At the conclusion of the sale the averages were well up on the year levelling at a very pleasing £191.18 (£25.71 up on 2025)
Many more top draw lambs can be sold to vendor advantage at this thriving sale at Longtown with plenty of new faces came and purchased high end quality with an abundance of potential customers going home empty handed.

Also incorporated in today’s sale was the second sale of 1,525 Cheviot Mule ewe lambs. Another very pleasing show of Cheviot Mule ewe lambs again met huge demand, with several southern purchasers being in attendance driving the trade well past vendors expectations.
Topping at £235 from W & R Hall, Allens Green, Hexham who consigned an absolutely fantastic run first draw ewe lambs to achieve the top average of the day at £201.

2,222 shearlings forward to a very busy ring of purchasers. Top end sheep proved very good to sell whilst second rate sheep proved difficult to place.
Topping at £360 for Texels from East Mains and Beltex from Gillesbie Farms whose run of Beltex gimmers where very well presented creating a lot of interest ringside.
Mule shearlings proved very good to sell topping at £330 consigned from North Hanging Wells.
