CRUMHAUGHHILL DISPERSAL TO £4,200

C & D Auction Marts Ltd were delighted to conduct the dispersal of the Crumhaughhill Flocks of unregistered pure-bred Texel and Suffolk females on behalf of Alan and Hazel Smith.

Many years of quality breeding and continued investment in both breeds has led to much success at Kelso and other ram sales and a huge crowd gathered at the sale, both ringside and online, with strong purchasing for both existing and newly established flocks.

The 49 Suffolks opened the sale with a flying trade from start to finish led by a £4,200 bid for a two-crop ewe by the Brompton sire. She sold to Jim and Sharon Robertson of The Becks, Langholm who are re-establishing a Suffolk flock. The same buyers also took home another two-crop ewe by the same sire at £3,600 together with the lead gimmer, by a son of the Brompton sire at £3,200, and a few other quality young ewes to complete their purchases.

Henry Jewitt, Gracies Farm, Barnard Castle made his presence felt by investing in a two-crop ewe, again by the Brompton sire, at £3,600 with another purchase at £2,000.  Messrs Lee, Stocksfield secured several quality ewes including a £2,400 two-crop ewe, and paying £2,000 for another two-crop and £2,000 for a gimmer.

Suffolk averages – Ewes £1,379.  Gimmers £1484.

146 Texels followed the Suffolks and experienced great demand with the second lot in the ring, a one-crop by a Craig Douglas sire, selling at £2,400 to Messrs Gray, Unthank.

Peacehay sires were to the fore with several of these rams being used over the years.  A three-crop ewe by Peacehay 3K sold at £2,100 to P. Hill, Whitby who also took a two-crop daughter of the Brijon sire at £2,000.

Four Texel females traded at £1,900 with Messrs Swindlehurst, Underbarrow taking two one-crops,  both by the Brijon sire and Messrs Foster of York buying the other two at this price, these being a one-crop by a Brijon sire and a gimmer by a Whiteley Hey ram.

Texel averages – Ewes £1,052.  Gimmers £741
