Longtown Beef Shorthorns Mon 21 Sept 26
There was a nice quality entry of pedigree Beef Shorthorns at the Longtown Show and Sale on 21st September.
After being ably judged by Janet Dunning, the sale opened with in-calf heifers, two of which made 3,000gns. Firstly, Alastair Gibson, Burnopfield sold Cutthorn Ruby Vida, by Cairnsmore Phenomenal, in-calf to Chrichton Wyatt, to Mr E. Wood, Waters Farm, Penrith; secondly at this price was Mrs L. J. Townsends`s 1st prize winning Coxhill Secret V871, by Glenisla Masterton and in-calf to Coxhill Panther which went to Philip Hanson, Lower Fulshaw, Nelson. Other in-calf heifers sold to 2,800gns, Cutthorn and 2,700gns Cutthorn and Burnfoot to average £3,018.
Unserved heifers sold to 2,800gns for Shawhill Dewdrop Wishful from Thomson, Roddick & Laurie. By Shawhill Rodney and from the herd`s Dewdrop family, she sold to James Watret, Burnside, Annan. This buyer took another from the same seller, Shawhill Welcome Jade at 2,400gns. Also selling at this price was the day`s champion, Burnfoot Ury Maid Winifrey by Podehole Reuben and out of one of the oldest cow familys in the breed. From H. & N. Sloan, Burnfoot, Lauder she sold to Matthew Thomson, Pilmuir, Hawick. Other unserved heifers sold to 2,200gns and 2,100gns, Shawhill and 2,100gns (twice), Jodame. Unserved heifers of all age groups averaged £2,111.
A good entry of cows with calves at foot sold to 3,400gns, paid by P. & J. Bailey, Far Bank End, Appleby to Thomson, Roddick & Laurie for Shawhill Dewdrop Tay, a young cow with her heifer calf. The 1st prize cow, Limelane Victoria Naomi with a bull calf headed the draft from Messrs T.A. & J. Swinbank, Darlington at 3,300gns to Messrs Armstrong, Terrace Farm, Lorton with others from Messrs Swinbank to 2,800gns and 2,700gns. The draft from Charles Lowther, Askham Hall made to 2,700gns (twice), 2,650gns (twice) and 2,600gns. Cows with calves levelled at £2,921 overall.
