Longtown Beef Shorthorns to 4,200gns

At Longtown on Monday 22nd September 2025, C & D Auction Marts Ltd held their 9th Annual show and sale of Beef Shorthorn females supported by the Beef Shorthorn Cattle Society.  There was a crowded ringside with a significant number of new breeders in attendance.

The judge, George Somerville, found his champion among the unserved heifers by selecting Shawhill Verity from Thomson, Roddick & Laurie. By Sowerby Parks Ricard out of a Barnaigh bred cow she sold for 3,800gns to I. & J. Park, Strontian, Fort William.  Shawhill took another 3,800gns for an unserved Broadhooks heifer, bought by M. Hodgson, Cumblands Farm, Carleton.

Top price of the day was a 1st prize in-calf heifer from Thomson, Roddick & Laurie, Shawhill WD Tamara, a Shawhill Henderson daughter out of an Isle of Man bred Faradale cow.  She went at 4,200gns to Messrs Darnbrook, Cleughside, Bailey. Other in-calf heifers sold to 3,400gns from Charles Lowther for a Lowther Konan daughter, in-calf to Askham T-Bone, bought by Mickley Stud.  The Lowther herd sold other in-calf heifers for 3,000gns and 2,800gns.

1st prize in the calf at foot section went to Franzeal Farming, Lauriston, Castle Douglas with Franzeal Samantha by Fearn Wyvis with her Castlemount Kubota bull calf at foot and in-calf to the same bull, she realised 3,400gns.  Augusta X1503 of Upsall, a five year old cow from J. & H. Gibson`s Appleton-le-Moors based Whiterose Herd sold for 3,200gns with a Mayfield Powerhouse calf at foot.

A draft of 2024 born heifers from the Strathendrick herd of Robert Taylor attracted considerable interest, selling to 2,700gns, 2,500gns (twice) and 2,300gns (twice).  Redstones Miss Ramsden Violet, a 3rd prize winning 2024 heifer from Charlie Fletcher and Jack Kay made 2,500gns and Messrs Swinbank, Limelane sold at 2,400gns with other young heifers to 2,200gns, Strathendrick; 2,100gns (twice), Whiterose and 2,000gns, Bradhill.

Averages:  Cows & heifers with calves at foot £3,185 (2024 – £2,258); In-calf heifers £3,517 (2024 – £2,415) & Unserved heifers £2,378 (2024 – £1,773).
