Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward an entry of 7,954 sheep comprising
of 4,820 prime hoggs and 3,134 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at
Longtown Mart on Thursday 6th February 2025.

A mixed show forward, yet buyers keen to purchase and trade remains
dear for all classes. The sale topped at £1,937 for Charolais from Messrs
Baxter, Moss Side, Hethersgill who sold others at £1,490. Angus cows sold to
£1,840 and £1,490 from EAP Glendinning, Over Cassock, Eskdalemuir with Belted
Galloways peaking at £1,320 from J Bell, Croft House, Scaleby and £1,286 from M
Compagnoni, Hoscote, Hawick. Top price per kilo of 260p and 241p from Moss
Side, Angus to 239p and 200p from Over Cassock and Belted Galloways sold to
218p from Hoscote.

A
larger show of 4,820 prime hoggs
were forward. Export hoggs and lightweight
hoggs in big demand being the dearest of the season, whilst heavies maintained
recent high rates of returns. Big demand for forecast for next week’s sale and
numbers are keenly sought after. Again, under finished hoggs are better sold in
the store and are wanted on a Tuesday at Longtown. 

The sale topped at 454p for Beltex
shown by JW Vevers, High Stenries, Waterbeck.  

Top per head of £250 for Texels
from A Campbell, Strawfrank, Lanark.

similar show of 3,134 ewes and rams
were forward. Lean continental ewes were
the dearest trade of the season, all other classes maintained last week’s very
high rates of return. All classes look well sold with trade being very firm.
More wanted on a weekly basis to satisfy a very strong demand. 

The sale topped at
£335 for Texel ewes from J Douglas, Cambeckhill, Newtown & Newbigging
Farms. 

Beltex peaked at £300
from B Ryder, Newton Cottage, Moffat.

Mule ewes sold to
£192 consigned by J Magnay, Smallholms, Chapelknowe.

Hill ewes topped
at £164 for Blackface ewes from J Ford, Broomlands, Kelso.

Rams to £265 for Texels
from AC Fotheringham, Ballinloan, Dunkeld.
