Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction
Marts Limited had forward an entry of 8207 sheep, comprising of 5180 prime
hoggs and 3027 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown Mart on Thursday
13th March 2025.

A full ringside of purchasers ensured all
classes were competitively bid for with grass fed hoggs meeting some
resistance. Better bred export hoggs still in demand and short of purchaser
requirements. Heavies continued at recent rates of return.

The sale topped at 468p for Beltex Hoggs shown by Mactaggart
Bros & Co, Castle Douglas.

Top price per head was £222 for Texel hoggs from D S & R
C Taylor, Easter Ochtermuthill, Crieff.

Overall
average of 331.79p (SQQ 346.3p)

Incorporated
in the weekly sale of prime hoggs was the prize show and sale of Blackface
hoggs kindly sponsored by The Scottish Farmer and Starline Feeds Ltd &
MacMin. The Directors, auctioneers and all the auction mart staff would like to
thank all parties involved with todays show and sale.

classes of cast ewes proved very easy to sell and way short of purchaser
requirements. All classes wanted for the coming weeks sales and will be sold to
vendor advantage.

Heavy ewes topped the sale at £365 for
Texels from Townfoot with others reaching £265 for Beltex, Hammerlands, £265
for Charollais, Beckfoot and £262 for Suffolks from Woodcroft.

Light ewes topped at £178 for Lleyns
from Cleughhead and rams topped at £275 for Suffolks from Beckfoot.

Cast cows reach a new level for all classes, many more needed
to meet buyer requirements with new outlets operating at the ringside. Top
price per head today day was a fantastic Limousin cow from first time vendors R
S Conley & Son, Barrasford Green Farm realising 332ppk and £2523.20.
Topping the pence per kilo section was a young Galloway bull from W J
Henderson, Whitehill making 345ppk
