Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward an entry of 9,622 sheep comprising
of 4,899 prime hoggs and 4,723 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at
Longtown Mart on Thursday 16th January 2025.

A much larger show of 32 cast cows were forward, again a mainly native
bred offering but a busy ringside of buyers ensured all classes were in demand.
The sale topped at £2,208 for a Beef Shorthorn shown by D & T
Bradley-Farmer, Wester Parkgate, Dumfries with top per kilo of 236p for a
Simmental from JA & E Dinwoodie, Archerbeck, Canonbie. More numbers are
required on a weekly basis here at Longtown to satisfy buyer demand.

A
much larger show of 4,723 ewes and rams were forward to the same ring of
purchasers. Trade very similar to that of a fortnight ago, but not as buoyant
as last week’s white hot rates of return. Heavy ewes saw the most resistance
whilst plain ewes would be every bit as dear. Cast sheep will remain in demand
for the foreseeable future. Entries are keenly sought after for next weeks
sale.     

The sale topped at
£330 and £320 for Texel ewes shown by RD Fleming, Hillhead, Kirkpatrick
Fleming.

Suffolks peaked at
£275 from Claycrop Farms Ltd, Kirkinner, Newton Stewart.

Mule ewes sold to
£220 from A Mclean, Killeonan, Campbeltown.

Hill ewes topped
at £142 for Blackfaces from CJ & NC Brodie, Allfornaught, Waterbeck and RW
Arthur, Hudspeth, Elsdon. Cheviot ewes sold to £140 from Messrs Hepburn &
Co., North House, Hawick.    

Rams to £250 for
Suffolks from Claycrop Farms Ltd, Newton Stewart.
