Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward an entry of 8,219 sheep comprising
of 4,001 prime hoggs and 4,218 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at
Longtown Mart on Thursday 23rd January 2025.

Another good show of cast cows forward again with trade remaining
strong throughout. The sale topped at £2,103 for Angus cows shown by G & T
Archibald, Craigens, Isle of Islay who also had others at £1,904 and £1,771,
with Angus to £1,785 from N Calvert & Son, Greensburn, West Hall and £1,616
from Bridgewater & Wood, Potholm, Langholm who also sold Beef Shorthorns at
£1,472.

Top per kilo of 235p, 224p and 220p for Angus from Craigens, with Angus
to 220p and Beef Shorthorns at 215p from Potholm and Galloways peaked to 184p
from Blackburn.

A
smaller and very mixed show of 4,001 prime hoggs
were forward. Store hoggs are
better sold on a Tuesday at Longtown to reach maximum returns. Please do not

best to market your stock.  

39-48kg well finished prime hoggs
were in demand and wanted on a weekly basis to satisfy demand, export hoggs in
particular, were way short of purchaser requirements. 

The sale topped at 439p for Beltex
shown by A Williamson, Dykehead, Penton.  

Top per head of £210 for Texels
from HM Livestock, Shethin, Ellon.

Overall average of 321.4p (SQQ 331.3p)

large show of 4,218 ewes and rams
were forward to the same ring of competitive
purchasers. Heavy ewes met some resistance, whilst lightweight ewes maintained
recent rates high rates of return.  

The sale topped at
£300 for Texel ewes shown by J Pirie, Machrihanish, Campbeltown.

Suffolks peaked at
£255 from A & HC Smith, Crumhaughhill, Hawick.

Mule ewes sold to
£190 from Newbigging Farms.  

Hill ewes topped
at £138 for Cheviots from RJ Oliver, High Brae, Roberton who also sold
Blackfaces at £136.

Rams to £210 for Texels
from R & H Braid, Leithenhall, Wamphray.
