Longtown Primestock Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts had forward a huge
entry of 8,577 sheep comprising of 5,492 hoggs and 3,085 cast ewes & rams
at their weekly sale at Longtown Mart on Thursday 29th January 2026.
PRIME HOGGS
Another substantial show of 5,492 hoggs sold to a very competitive
ring of purchasers ensuring all classes saw a substantial increase in trade.
Included in the prices below and the market averages are no fewer than 2,247 Swaledale,
Blackface and Cheviot Hoggs (over 40% of the sale). Numbers handled with ease
and are actively sought after on a weekly basis.
Heavy hoggs seeing an improvement in demand being far easier to
place. Export weights and smalls proved in serious demand being up a gear again
and in serious demand and way short of customer requirements once again. Good commercial
export weights again seen regularly trading 345-360ppk with the best exports 400ppk
plus. Many more handy weighted sheep wanted by customer request.

CAST EWES AND RAMS
A smaller show of 3,085 cast ewes and rams were forward
seeing a rise of £10-£12 across the board. As numbers tighten trade is on the
move, ewes wanted and in high demand for the foreseeable sales at Longtown.

CAST COWS
An improved show of cattle forward to a keen ringside
of buyers. The sale topped at £2,245 for a Simmental cow shown by N Calvert
& Son, Greensburn, Brampton which also achieved top price per kilo of 286p.
Angus sold to £2,204 from R & J Kerr, Balegreggan, Argyll and Limousins
peaked at £1,999 from RS Conley & Sons, Barrasford Green, Hexham. Belted
Galloways sold to £1,937 and 260p from Hoscote Est, Hawick.
