C&D Auction Marts had forward an entry of 7,890 sheep comprising of 3,912 prime lambs and 3,978 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown Mart on Thursday 3rd September 2026.
PRIME LAMBS
A much larger show of 3,912 prime lambs sold tot the same ring of competitive purchasers. An increased show of 32-42kg lambs forward including 986 Easycare lambs consigned by M/s J Wight, East Fortissat, Lanarkshire who made the successful trip down with over 1,000 sheep which were a pleasure to sell.
Another fantastic run of 200 lambs consigned by M/s Walby, East House, Hexham sold to a top of 434ppk and averaged 3.57ppk being notably dearer than other centres.
Heavier well finished lambs also proved very good to sell as M/s Reed & Hill, Lingey Field, Hexham showed 3 pens of heavy lambs to break 400ppk and £200 topping at £240.
Top price per head of £240 for Texel lambs shown by Reed & Hill, Lingey Field, Hexham who also achieved the top per kilo of 453p, again for Texel lambs.
Many more lambs are wanted on a weekly basis to satisfy an ever growing purchaser enquiry at Longtown. All roads lead to Longtown, the most consistent market in the country, with the exception of none.

CAST EWES AND RAMS
A larger and very mixed show of 3,978 of cast ewes and rams were forward to a busy ringside of purchasers ensuring all classes maintained recent high rates of return.
Continental ewes were in very short supply and numbers are keenly sought after for the coming weeks. Nations of ewes selling ewes selling over £200 topping at £320.
Plain ewes of all breeds met a large enquiry as feeding orders came into operation as the light weight hill ewes descended on Longtown in their droves. Keep them coming.
Heavy ewes topped at £320 for Texel ewes shown by D Smith, Low Meadow, Smithfield.
Light ewes topped at £192 for Easycare ewes from J Birnie (A Firm), East Gowkhill, Aberdeen.
Rams topped at £300 for Charollais from D Carr & Son, Highwood, Hexham.
