C&D Auction Marts had forward an entry of 8,920 sheep comprising of 4,088 prime lambs and 4,832 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown Mart on Thursday 24th September 2026.
PRIME LAMBS
A larger better quality show of 4,088 prime lambs forward to an increased ring of purchasers ensuring all classes sold to vendor advantage with more required for the coming weeks by purchaser demand. A definite divide in trade between grass finished lambs and fed lambs.
Top price per head of £214 for Texel lambs from D & J Warden, North Mains of Dun, Montrose with top price per kilo of 468p for Beltex lambs shown by CJ Roots, Kilnford Croft, Dumfries.
Well bred and well finished export lambs sold well with plenty of lambs selling in excess of 390ppk
Included in todays sale was the finest run of just over 1,000 Mule lambs that has been seen in Longtown for many a year with a trade to match. Topping at £200 for a pen of 4 with another pen of 36 at £171. from regular consigners M/s BD & MS Hope, Mouldy Hills, With plenty of penful’s of mule lambs £160 plus enforcing Longtown as the premier centre to market well finished North of England Mule prime lambs.

After topping the Mule section in todays sale and topping the averages at Longtown for their Mule Ewe Lambs, not just this year but for the past 5 years M/s BD & MS Hope, Mouldy Hills will be dispersing their entire Blackface sheep stock at Longtown on Wednesday 14th October 2026.
After decades of breeding and selecting top quality replacements and stock rams, these Blackface sheep are in the top 5% of the traditional Northumberland type and a dispersal that should not be missed.

CAST EWES AND RAMS
A larger show of 4,832 of cast ewes and rams were forward, to the largest ring of purchasers in the north of England consisting of 21 active purchasers acting on 59 accounts. Cast rams sold to biblical rates and record levels never seen before.
Best Texel ewes saw an increase in trade with heavy thick ewes selling to recent high rates of return.
Feeding ewes in big demand and keenly sought after for all breeds. Many more of all classes can be sold to vendor advantage. Numbers are handled with ease.
Heavy ewes topped at £338 for a pen of 14 Texel ewes shown by A & HC Smith, Crumhaughhill, Hawick. Countless pens of texel ewes selling to £300+ proving
Light ewes topped at £168 for Cheviot ewes from J Barrie, Barholm, Gatehouse of Fleet.
Swaledale ewes topped at £148 for a penful of hefty ewes consigned by M/s DJ Scott, The Brigg, Hexham with others to £142.
Blackface ewes proved good to sell topping at £160 for a huge Scotch bred ewe consigned from Riskinhope Trust, Meggethead
Rams topped at £550 for a huge BFL ram Consigned by M/s W Lockhart & Son, Lagganpark. Not far behind was a Texel Ram fromM/s A Smith Crumhaughhill, Hawick which realised £540. Tups are a very saleable commodity and are way short of customer requirements. Keep them coming for premium returns.

Cattle remain a buoyant trade with numbers required to satisfy buyer demand. The sale topped at £1,902 for an Angus from DJ & M Moffat, Rigg Smiddy, Moffat with top per kilo of 295p from the same home. Galloways sold to 232p from JW Forster & Son, Smithsteads, Bewcastle.
