C&D Auction Marts had forward an entry of 5,789 sheep comprising of 77 spring lambs, 3,445 hoggs and 2,267 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown Mart on Thursday 7th May 2026.

NEW SEASON SPRING LAMBS

An increased entry of spring lambs sold to a very competitive trade with many more required on a weekly basis to satisfy an ever-increasing demand.

Top price per head of £221 for Suffolk lambs from JG Scott, East Ingliston, Forfar.

Top per kilo of 516p for Texel lambs shown by Claycrop Farms Ltd, Newton Stewart.

PRIME HOGGS

A similar entry of 3,445 prime hoggs forward.

All classes of well finished hoggs were in big demand proving short of purchaser requirements.

Heavy hoggs proved to be the trade of the day selling to unseen rates. Export hoggs in short supply and very keenly sought after for next weeks sale.  

Top price of 514p per kilo for Beltex hoggs from M & W Fotheringham, Drumcairn, Perth with top per head of £270 for Texels shown by MJ Lawson, Pasture House, Wigton.

Overall average 405.1p (SQQ 418.6p)

CAST EWES AND RAMS

A similar show of 2,267 cast ewes and rams forward to a huge contingent of purchasers ensuring all classes sold to vendor advantage being the dearest sale of the season. The prices speak for themselves as trade is unrivalled by anywhere.

All classes of ewes are wanted for next weeks bonanza as trade is set to peak over the next 14 days. Now is the time to sell.  

Texel ewes sold to a top of £325 from GJ Toppin, Bascodyke Foot, Ainstable.

Suffolks sold to £275 from AW Ainslie, Linkshead, Cockburnspath.

Blackfaces peaked at £190 from A & S Murray & Sons, West Deanraw, Hexham with Cheviot ewes selling to £180 from D & K Graham, Birsca, Lockerbie.

Rams topped at £340 for a Charollais from Beckfoot Farms.

Cast cows remain a buoyant trade and sell to a competitive ringside of buyers. The sale peaked at £2,154 for a Limousin shown by H Graham, Holme House, Walton with top per kilo of 298p for a Simmental from IHG Warden, Skelfhill, Hawick and 280p for a Beef Shorthorn from JDM Thomson, Pilmuir, Hawick.
