C&D Auction Marts had forward an entry of 7,108 sheep comprising of 42 lambs, 4,298 hoggs and 2,768 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown Mart on Thursday 23rd April

PRIME NEW SEASON SPRING LAMBS

A small offering of first draw spring lambs were forward with trade very buoyant and numbers short of requirements.

Top price per head of £236 for a pair of Suffolk lambs from Martindale, The Land

Top per kilo at 497p/kg for a pen of 16 Suffolks from Mather, Shandford.

Overall average 438.02ppk (SQQ 484.93ppk)

PRIME HOGGS

A very very mixed show of hoggs forward. In spec’ well finished hoggs sold to huge returns whilst under finished, or hoggs with impairments sold to realisation. Hoggs that require further finishing are easier sold on at Longtown on a Tuesday through the store market.

Heavy hoggs sold well with plenty of pens of better bred hoggs making £210-£220, Topping price per head at £238 for one Suffolk hogg from J Lamb, Ingleston.

Export and small hoggs in big demand topping per kilo at 527.3ppk for one Beltex hogg from T Magnay, Galleywreay.

Many more smalls and exports wanted on a weekly basis for an ocean of customers that require supplies on a weekly basis.

CAST EWES AND RAMS

A similar show of cast ewes and rams were forward to an increased ring of purchasers which ensured all classes where dearer on the week being way short of purchaser requirements. Light weight ewes proved to be the call of the day with numerous pens of blackface ewes seeing between £155-£165 topping at £180 for a penful of hefty Northumberland bred ewes consigned by M/s Chalrlton, Whitside farm, Haltwhistle. Not far behind was a penful of 23 scotch bred blackface ewes consigned by M/s Cartner, Blackwoodridgehouse, Lockerbie realising £174. Cheviot ewes followed suit topping at £182 for a pen of 7 Consigned by M/s Ferrie, Douglas Square, newcastleton.

Texel ewes were forward in greater numbers with an outstanding ewe topping the sale at £400 consigned by M/s Paterson, Veltigar, Tankerness. This run of 32 exceptional ewes averaged a staggering £331.52.

Suffolk ewes sold to a big trade topping at £280 for a single pure-bred ewe consigned from Ms Martindale, The Land, Lockerbie. Pen after pen traded between £225-£235.

Mule ewes were back in fashion topping at £225 for a fine pair of scotch mules consigned by M/s Spence, Corrielaw, Lockerbie. Strongest mules regularly traded at £185-£195 with several pens breaching £200.

Rams sold to recent high rates of return being unrivalled. Topping the sale was a monster of a texel bred ram consigned by M/s Halliday, Crawthet, Lockerbie realsing £335. Plenty of heavy tups breaching £250
