Longtown Primestock Sale Report
The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart plc had forward 16 prime cattle, 2 young bulls, 12 OTM cattle, 8,203 prime hoggs and 3,434 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 26th March 2015.
The Easter show of prime cattle, bulls and OTM cattle was sponsored by Country Commercial Insurance Brokers and judged by Steven Wilson, Butcher, Corby Hill, Carlisle, who awarded the Championship to a Limousin heifer from A.E. Fawkes & Sons, Welton Farm which weighed 620 kilos and was purchased by the judge for 219.5p (£1,360.90).

Another large show of 8,203 prime hoggs were forward and averaged 188.1p per kilo overall (SQQ 197.3p). However, a much larger show of heavy hoggs were forward and were 20p per kilo steadier on the week, this resulted in a lower overall average. The SQQ was a lot higher which was due to the fact that the export hoggs and lightweight hoggs still sold easily at recent high rates. Trade was as good as has been seen anywhere this week in most other centres. Top of 311p per kilo for Beltex from Lurgan and to £120 per head for Texels from Durran Mains.

The 3,434 cast ewes and rams were a similar trade on the week and look set to remain easily sold for the foreseeable future. Rams to £179 for Texels from Upper Mains. Heavy ewes to £163 for Texels from Edendales. Hill ewes to £89 for Blackfaces from Longyester and Whiteside.
