Longtown Primestock Sale Report

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart plc had forward 32 prime cattle, 8 prime bulls, 23 OTM cattle, 4,026 prime lambs and 5,470 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 20th August 2015.

An excellent show of cattle saw trade maintain late high rates. The whole sale averaged 210.4p as growing demand continues at Longtown. The sale was topped at 232.5p for a Limousin bullock shown by A & WJ Taylor & Son, Dashwell Green purchased by Border Meats Wholesale Butchers, Lockerbie. Limousin heifers sold to 228.5p twice, firstly from Messrs Taylor; purchased by Highgate Meats Ltd, Troutbeck, the again from J W Vevers, High Stenries purchased by Mr G Chapman. Charolais heifers also sold to 228.5p sold by Messrs Taylor and bought by Border Meats.

A nice show of young bulls sold very well and many more could have been sold to vendors advantage. Top price to 227.5p from J Jardine, Yett. Charolais bulls topped at 222.5p from JW Vevers, High Stenries.

Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart also held there Summer Show of Prime Cattle, Prime Bulls and OTM cattle. The show was kindly sponsored by G Walker Building Services and expertly judged by Mr Granville Moor who awarded the Championship to a limousin heifer shown by JW Vevers, High Stenries which sold to 228.5p bought by Mr G Chapman. The first prize bullock was from A & WJ Taylor & Son, selling to 223.5p bought by the judge.

Barren cows an excellent entry sold to a top of 144p for the second prize beef cow, a limousin shown by Mr Garthwaite, Wysebyhill Cottage. Top price per head was £1139 for the first prize beef cow from A & A Ewing, Dumbretton. Native cows sold to 140p for an Angus from Messrs Fisher, Cleughhead. Dairy cows sold to 127p for the first prize from T & M Irving, Becton Hall. Top price per head was £990.60 again from Becton Hall. The second prize from T B Imrie, Harelawhole sold 112p. Stock bulls met a tremendous trade and sold to 111p for a Hereford from Messrs Armstrong, Randalinton which realised £1209.90. Aged Simmental bulls sold to £1020 from Messrs Tinning. A much larger show of 4,026 prime lambs were forward, as in line with all other centres the overall sale average of 142.6p/kg (SQQ 143.9p). Best quality lambs continued to gain a premium with more required to fulfil buyers demand. Top price of £81 per head for a Texel from Cakebread, Commonside and to 183p per kilo for Beltex from Powheads.

Another large show of 5,470 ewes were sold to the usual ring of buyers, heavy ewes continued to sell well with an increased number of small hill ewes forward, being slightly easier as seen in all other centres. Cast rams also sold to recently high rates.
